Proposal - Work in Progress.

---------WORK IN PROGRESS---- - Using the manifesto of possibilities to inform this project by Nathaniel Pitt, Dr. Jonathan Carter and The University of Wolverhampton Biomedical Science Dept. www.skabs.blogspot.com

TITLE

SkABS – Skin, Art & Biomedical Science
An interdisciplinary, multi agency investigation into the collaboration between Artists, NHS Dermatologists / Physicians and Biomedical Scientists from the University of Wolverhampton.

SUMMERY
SkABS will form a working group consisting of experts from various fields of expertise. The initial proposal consists of photography and an installation based work. SkABS intends to design and build a ‘hyper-real’ 1:50 scale sculpture of an enlarged area of skin. The depth of the sculpture would be 15cm – This corresponds to the depth of penetration from Inferred Biomedical Photography.

The scaled sculpture will harbour various areas of difference. Cancer and other skin disease may be present, this will be coupled with corresponding Infrared photography framed and wall based. The Sculpture will either be plinth based or an interactive ‘walkway.’

CONTEXT

The project convenor is Nathaniel Pitt. Nathaniel is an artist, educator, gallery owner and now MA student at the University of Wolverhampton. His agenda is motivated by his interest in Art and Scientific collaboration. This project proposal will also evidence his MA and planned future PhD practice. A part of his rationale for art is in the experimentation and development of different areas of expertise, exploring avant-garde ideas of art having a social implication on other areas of life. He is also interested in other art issues about authorship, division of labour and multi-disciplinary working practices. The other specialists, collaborators and advisors also share these ideas. It is an essential and integral part of the working group process, the practical manufacture and design will be a full collaboration driven exercise using all ideas regardless of specialise.
The other key collaborators are an NHS dermatologist Dr Jonathan Carter and the Biomedical Science department at the University of Wolverhampton. Dr. Carter has published work on ---section to be added--- He will be a key advisor in the design and implementation of the scale sculpture adding invaluable insight and a tangible realistic exploration of some issues facing modern dermatology. The reason for his involvement is primarily in a professional capacity, hopefully the project will highlight the area of Dermatology in the media and amongst other medical departments.
The Biomedical Department at the University of Wolverhampton will assist in the area of Biomedical applications and add a scientific value to the project, it is hoped that students studying for their MSc’s will engage in this and their own offshoot projects. Their specialist understanding of the potential and limitations of inferred photography will influence the design and implementation of the project. The director of studies is his reason for involvement is in ---section to be added ---.
The other participants are to be put out to tender – Science fiction special effects companies and an independent arts evaluation company. ---[approach B&B?]--- These participants although tendered would be selected on the relationship and methodologies they can employ for a set budget and they may become central to the delivery and dissemination of the final work.

The key aims are as follows:
• Inform practice amongst specialists - Enrich the knowledge of SkABS participants
• Inform practice amongst specialists – e.g. ‘A giant teaching aid’ for medical students
• Exhibition and wide spread dissemination of work in the Public domain –
• Inform the public, through engagement - Challenge conceptions of art & Science
• Inform the Public, through engagement – Health implications
• Create an artefact
• Share knowledge through an evaluative working practice
• Encourage media involvement

The Audience:

• Art patrons, visitors who have a sophisticated knowledge of reading art in the gallery setting
• Media - Articles and reviews will be sought
• Public - The working group will seek out both art specific and alternative venues
• Specialist Stakeholders – An exhibition at the University of Wolverhampton and other educational institutions specifically placed to engage students of Art and Biomedical Science
• Medical Stakeholders – Dermatology conferences and NHS institutions.

METHODS

The working methodology is central to the project with all participants having an equal claim to authorship of design and implementation. Research and development will be independently carried out from the specialist positions of Art, Biomedical Science and Dermatology. The initial proposal of a ‘Hyper-real’ scaled sculpture twinned with Biomedical Photography will then act as a vehicle to bring all this information together in SkABS design meetings with each specialist area contributing to, altering and influencing design and implementation decisions.

This is the initial area of interest from the Biomedical Science department. ---250 words to be added by specialist—What methods of specialist photography could be explored in relation to Dermatology and art in this project?---

This is the initial area of interest to be explored in Dermatology ---250 words to be added by specialist—What areas of specialist Dermatology could be explored in this project?---

This is the initial area of interest and research for art and the construction methods to be explored;
The influence for this initial idea of a sculpture based installation is based on the unique quality of inferred photography, photography as an art form has recently remerged as a fundamental discipline in the world of post-modernist conceptual or post-conceptual art that occupies some of the current avant-garde practices amongst contemporary artists.
This project will refer to an ongoing examination of key texts – Postproduction, relational aesthetics and ---to be added---.
An awareness of the artist Ron Mueck is going to prove important as the initial proposal and scaled sculpture will borrow much from his work. Mueck will be approached as an advisor or even as a main collaborator. ‘
Ron Mueck (born 1958) is an Australian hyperrealist sculptor working in Great Britain. Mueck's early career was as a model maker and puppeteer for children's television and Mueck moved on to establish his own company in London, making photo-realistic props and animatronics for the advertising industry. Mueck's sculptures faithfully reproduce the minute detail of the human body, but play with scale to produce disconcertingly jarring visual images. His five metre high sculpture Boy 1999 was a feature in the Millennium Dome and later exhibited in the Venice Biennale.’ source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Mueck

‘Hyperrealism’ is a form of art and practice that has a strong and important critical role in the history of art since the 70’s. Photorealism and also the work of Gerhard Richter will form some of the research and learning involved in the project.

The construction of the sculpture will be put out to tender, we will be seeking special effects companies that we can all work with who can deliver desirable outcome to a budget.
